Food, Health, and Our Future

A Scarcity From Waste

Every day in America, millions of children and families struggle with food insecurity and poor nutrition.

At the same time, billions of seeds from fruits and vegetables are thrown away, wasting the potential to grow healthy food and create lasting abundance.

This crisis of food insecurity and food waste is why Seed America exists. To save seeds, regrow what’s been lost, and provide free, nutritious food while teaching the next generation about farming, sustainability, and nutritional health.

GMO, BIOENGINEERED food & our health

Genetic engineering alters the gene profile of an organism.

The insertion, modification, and deletion of genes is often heritable, producing new strains or breeds of organisms that are not naturally occurring.

GMOs produce toxic substances.

Animal studies have demonstrated toxicity and hormone disruption related to the pesticide substances expressed by GMOs.

GMO has a silenced melanin gene and produce raised levels of alpha-aminoadipate,  a toxic advanced glycoxidation end product (AGE), implicated in the development of diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

GMOs can affect immune system function, leading to diseases such as autoimmune diseases.

Pesticides, phosmet and malathion, are both organophosphates known to harm the nervous system.

Chlorpyrifos (an insecticide) has been detected in fruits and vegetables - impacting neurological development and children's health.

The U.S. applies about 1 billion pounds of pesticides each year in agriculture.

Food Waste

Food waste is one of the most significant environmental problems worldwide. The U.S. wastes approximately 40% of its food supply annually.

Large amounts of food end up in landfills despite ongoing hunger and food insecurity.

Reducing food waste promotes sustainability, environmental conservation, and community health.

Decomposing food waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than CO₂.

Food waste squanders water, labor, and energy resources.

Psychologically, overconsumption and waste stem from social and behavioral habits.

THE awakening truths

The Rise of Bioengineered & Processed Foods

The Rise of Bioengineered & Processed Foods

The Rise of Bioengineered & Processed Foods

  • Ultra-processed and bioengineered foods dominate our grocery shelves.

  • These foods are linked to chronic disease, mental health issues, weakened immune systems, and environmental harm.

Millions Affected

The Rise of Bioengineered & Processed Foods

The Rise of Bioengineered & Processed Foods

  •  Over 44 million Americans, including nearly 13 million children, experience food insecurity

  •  56% American children and 49% of Adults have poor diets leaving us physically, mentally and, emotionally unhealthy.

Malnutrition & Nutrition Gaps

The Rise of Bioengineered & Processed Foods

Malnutrition & Nutrition Gaps

  • Even when food is available, it’s often processed, cheap, and low in nutrients - leading to increased health and developmental problems.

  • Research shows that a lack of nutrition increases risks of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and shorter lifespans. As well as mental health issues and poor academic scores.

Unhealthy School Lunches

Lost Farming & Gardening Knowledge

Malnutrition & Nutrition Gaps

  •  School meals are too often high in sugar, salt, and dangerous processed food ingredients.

  • Instead of fueling learning, kids are left tired and unfocused.

  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole foods are rare in the cafeteria line.

Lost Farming & Gardening Knowledge

Lost Farming & Gardening Knowledge

Lost Farming & Gardening Knowledge

  •   Generations ago, farming and gardening were everyday skills.
Today, most children — and adults — don’t know how to grow, prepare, or cook food.

  • Schools failing to teach agriculture or nutrition lead to increased food insecurity and chronic diseases, poor public health, and nutrition. Leaving our children dependent on ultra-processed foods and the food industry.

Environmental Impact

Lost Farming & Gardening Knowledge

  • Food waste: Billions of seeds and tons of food are thrown away daily. California + New York combined is equivalent to food that ends up wasted.

  • Industrial farming: Strains soil, pollutes water, and reduces biodiversity.

  • When food decomposes in landfills, it produces methane, which is far more potent than CO2.

  •  An estimated 58% of landfill methane emissions come from landfilled food waste.

“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”
